You may be dreaming of a sunny spring day for an outdoor engagement shoot in the park, but if your wedding is in spring or summer, you may not find time to do a spring photo shoot. Or if you do, the April Showers may nip excitement in the bud. Not to worry! I've done some research on photo-friendly indoor locales which would be great for shoots.
Here are a few nice n' toasty indoor locale ideas for winter shoots or backup ideas on poor weather shoot days. Admissions listed below are per person. Please check links to assure availability at these locales.
The Jewel Box, Forest Park - $Free
Your best option during unsavory weather is an indoor heated location that poses as an outdoor open-air location, and nothing works better than greenhouses. The Jewel Box, and other greenhouse-like locales, provide their own outdoor sense of foliage plus lots of light and a private romantic feeling. The Jewel Box is a very popular option. Likewise, any indoor location featuring giant windows and skylights will work too. Also great if you happen to own your own greenhouse on personal property!
Linnean House, Botanical Gardens - $8
Another great greenhouse, Linnean House offers a much more exotic backdrop of interesting and tropical foliage. Located just behind the cafe in the rear of the visitor's center, it also features a garden-like space, complete with stone walkways and quaint sitting benches. Linnean House features romantic arched doorways, stained glass windows and Victorian style garden vistas chock full of greenery. Note: May be less green in winter months.
The Butterfly House, Faust Park, Chesterfield, MO - $6
Climate-controlled at 85 degrees with 75% humidity, you may want to visit purely to get away from the bite of winter. It'll do wonders for your complexion! In addition, you get butterflies! The Butterfly House, located on Olive Blvd. in West County, is another greenhouse that features many varieties of butterflies and tropical foliage. If you're lucky, a butterfly may take a seat on your head or shoulder for a few portraits as well!
The Carousel, Faust Park, Chesterfield, MO - $1
While you're at the Butterfly House, you may as well walk right on next door to the St. Louis Carousel at Faust Park. It's an indoor carousel (scroll to see image), and it's only a dollar per person to ride. You can't not smile when riding a carousel, and the backdrop of carnival fun and childhood memories would make for whimsical and unique engagement or bridal portraits.
City Museum, Downtown, - $12
If you're a fun, artistic and adventurous couple, the eclectic and intriguing exhibits at City Museum would be just the spot to photograph you. If you've never been to City Museum, you're in for an interactive artistic treat. One can spend an entire day at City Museum, but as our engagement sessions cover just an hour of shooting, I recommend choosing 2 or 3 favorite spots specifically for the shoot, and then you can stay afterward and play for the rest of the day. Recommended sites would be the main level Mezzanine, Enchanted Caves and Architecture Hall (including the Vault Room).
Crowne Plaza Hotel Lobby, Clayton, MO - Free
If you're a classy couple, a fancy and elegant hotel lobby or lounge room may be just the right backdrop to enhance your personality. The Crowne Plaza in Clayton has a beautiful lobby with a grand piano, shining marble floors, giant chandeliers and a grand sweeping staircase. The Chase Park Plaza also has some very nice arches and hallways for lounging and considering your lover. If you have visited some other hotels and lounges with ambiances of which you were particularly fond, I'm open to your suggestions.
These locale suggestions are simply a starting point. As always, I am open to suggestions for doing shoots in any part of town that has significance or interest to you and your fiance. I also hope to encourage you that even the deadest part of the year weatherwise can be the most exciting time to find fun indoor places to shoot your engagement portraits. If you ever find yourself disappointed with the mucky weather or unable to find an opening to book during warmer months, consider these options and book your engagement shoot today!
